Shelbyville, Kentucky is a town located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,746. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area and is on the Eastern Seaboard ofKentucky. Shelbyville is one of two towns in Jefferson County (the other being Oak Grove) which together make up what was once called "The Darkest Corner". The name comes from its location between Lebanon and Frankfort Counties on the Ohio River at its confluence with the river's tributaries. A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1918. The first settler in Shelbyville was James Hatton, who arrived there with his family in 1827. Hatton named his new community after General Andrew Jackson; Jackson had commanded a brigade which marched into battle against Native Americans at Clarksburg, Virginia that year. In 1830–31, Daniel Guest purchased land northeast of present-day Shelbyville from John Witherspoon for $5 per acre ($40 to $60 per mile). Guest built a log cabin and began to grow crops although he never received help from members of Congress to build a courthouse or survey township because they were afraid that such an act would encourage colonizing by European settlers who might not have recognized their own claims to land as Indian Territory did not expire until 1792 when it became part of Kentucky pursuant to Treaty #4between France and Great Britain less than two weeks after President George Washington signed it! In 1839–40 Prentice Mifflin surveyed what would become present-day Shelbyville Township Lots 1-3 following Purchase No.: 269 from William Miller for $10 per lot (with some improvements). Mifflin also erected a blacksmith shop on lot 4 near Post Office Square today’s corner store building back then known as “The Blacksmith Shop” where he hammered nails for early settlers onto logs before coming into business himself later becoming one of America’s most successful small businessmen! Today all but three lots are either still extant or have been developed into housing developments including: Apple Orchard Shopping Center off I-65 just east of town square; Cumberland Farms subdivision off US 36 just southwest immediately adjacent to high school campus across street - homebuilders have replaced most original trees with large contemporary replacements including live oaks now making this one of only few areas within KY without these old fashioned features - much like much older downtown Louisville which has undergone more recent development complete with large modern buildings since prior author wrote article while Commercial Boulevard & Main Street Greenwood/Oak Grove neighborhood existing unchanged since 1915 when first written about

Shelbyville was founded in 1792 by James Shelby and his wife, Eleanor. The city was named after the Shelby family's home, which stood on a hill near the present-day downtown area. The first post office in Shelbyville was established in 1812. In 1820, the population of Shelbyville numbered 582 residents; it had grown to 1,500 by 1850. In 1871, the city became a part of Louisville and Great Britain. By 1920, however, it had declined to less than 100 residents. After World War II, when Louisville's growth outstripped that of Shelbyville, the city merged with its neighbor to form Louisville-Jefferson County (LJC) in 1964. Today, Shelbyville is an enclave within LJC with a population of just over 60 residents; its only commercial activity is support for local libraries.
