The first coffee shop in Shelbyville, Kentucky was opened in the early 1800s by a man named David Capps. He started out selling Newman's Own bread and coffee. The first settlers in Shelbyville were two families from Maryland who arrived in 1792. They named their new community "Shelby." The first post office was established in 1814 and it operated for four years. A store and hotel were built in 1825 and opened by John Sikes, father of future U.S. Senator James K. Sikes Sr.. In 1830, landowner David Ritchie donated to the town a tract of land that included present-day Shelbyville and parts of what are now Woodlawn Cemetery and Park Boulevard. In 1839, General John Custer died during an Indian attack on the Cheyenne River Agency near today's Tellico Hills Community College; his death left a remainder of $2 million to be distributed among claimants based on his estate as well as other claims against him throughout Indian Territory.. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, residents of Shelbyville took up arms to support the Confederacy and many moved to Louisville or Lexington where they could benefit from government subsidies for food production within Confederate territory.
