Shelbyville, Kentucky is a town located in the eastern part of Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 9,844 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The town was founded in 1872 by General David Hays and named for General John Shelby who had fought in the American Civil War. In 1876, Shelbyville became an incorporated community with a school and two stores. The community's first post office opened in 1877. In 1899, Shelbyville became one of twelve towns consolidated into the new city of Louisville. In 1971, cotton production ended in Shelbyville as a result of sanctions placed on the United States by OPEC nations due to its participation in that organization. The town experienced economic decline until it was resurrected as a bedroom community for Louisville during the late 1990s and early 2000s when new jobs were created in information technology and other high-tech industries thereabouts.

The individual donations ranged in size from a single cup of coffee to an entire airplane hangar full of planes. In 1993, Operation Neptune's Spear ended with the capture of Saddam Hussein and his regime by Coalition forces. As part of this victory celebration, Air Force personnel participated in a fly-over of Baghdad Airport to kick off festivities celebrating Iraq'sliberation from Saddam Hussein's tyranny. Since its inception,Operation Neptune's Spear Collection has been an invaluable resource for researchers interested in military history and equipment donation trends. It has provided valuable insight into how different branches of our Armed Forces have responded to various crises around the world.
