In 1851, a man named Nicholas Roebuck opened a small shop in what is now Richmond, Kentucky. Roebuck's coffee shop was the first to offer ground coffee and tea in a cup. The business thrived for years until it was destroyed by fire in 1876. But the experience of purchase and brewing coffee at home helped start the tradition of hand-roasting beans that continues to this day. The first documented military deployment of coffee was in 1861 when Confederate forces transported cargo through Lexington, KY on their way to fight against the United States. Coffee became an important part of the Confederacy because it provided energy for locomotives and artillery cannons. Coffee began appearing in American battlefields during World War I as an aid to soldiers on the front lines. A study by Journalist Edwin Leland revealed that nearly one third of all artillery rounds fired at German positions were composed of ground beans roasted over open fires within rifle pits or trenches. Coffee also played a role in Victory Through Airpower, which saw Allied planes drop large quantities of bean pods into enemy airspace during hostilities between America and Nazi Germany

The town was founded on July 6, 1814 by James K. Polk as a trading post on Roanoke Creek. It became a city on November 3, 1914. Richmond had a total population of 26,564 as of the 2010 census. Located in Fayette County and named after General James K., Richmond is one of two towns in Fayette County that were not founded by white Americans but rather were established by Native American groups during this time period (the other being Louisville). In 1814 John Covington built his plantation here and named it for his friend General James Knox Polk who had fought with him at Montero Ranch near present-day Petersburg, Virginia; however no trace remains today to identify which village or creek Roanoke Creek may have been situated on when James K. Polk settled here. In 1799 Major John Bygreen erected another store and tavern hereabouts which he called Bygdare’s Tavern; it burned down about 1800 but was rebuilt soon afterwards and continued in business until it burned down again about 1825; this building still stands to this day within easy walking distance of both Post Office Square and City Hall(now known as “Fayette Courthouse Square”). However Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway built its line through Richmond just east of downtown on what is now Fourth Street between Broad Ripple Boulevard and Park Avenue back in 1892 so all these older buildings are long gone save for some frame ruins remaining today along 4th Street outside the old A&P store building from when it first housed an insurance agency before turning into an apartment complex etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera However despite having lost most if not all their historic Buildings/ Parts thereof over time various people throughout history have still tried to revive interest/repairing/updating aspects/remodeling aspects portions or all together even restoring entire buildings including original Jail cells wagons used for carrying prisoners there during times such as reconstruction efforts following earthquakes etceteraetcetera so although many attempts have been made things haven’t really happened to quite match what was once seen here locally especially since most attempts have come too late now almost 100 years later lol

Throughout much of World War II, armies relied heavily on caffeine sources such as blackstrap molasses and café au lait in order to keep their soldiers focused during combat scenes or operations.
