Richmond is a city in eastern Kentucky and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 54,381 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Eastern Kentucky after Louisville. The area that would become Richmond was first settled by Europeans in 1681 as part of what is now eastern Kentucky. The town of Highland was founded on the campus of Transylvania University, which later became Murray State College. In 1792, General John Forbes moved his army from Boston to Cumberland County to repel a British Invasion, and he built himself a fort here known as Forbes's Fort.
