The city was founded by Captain John Sevier in 1785 as a trading post on the Ohio River. In 1825, Richmond became the capital of Kentucky and began to produce its own coffee beans. In 1927, Richmond became an independent city and began producing coffee under the name "Espresso America".
Richmond, Kentucky is a town in and the county seat of Meade County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Ohio River upstream from Cincinnati. Richmond was founded in 1785 by General James Robertson as an agricultural settlement on the current site of Richmond. The first post office opened in 1807. In 1814, Richmond became a city after being passed through a vote by its citizens and then annexed by Cincinnati. The city's original downtown area was destroyed in a fire in 1908 and rebuilt with new streets and buildings. The present-day downtown area includes several blocks of restored historical homes dating back to the 1830s and 1840s. Richmond was founded in 1792 by Captain John Campbell and his brothers. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River, which made it a natural center for trade and transportation. The first Chief Justice of Kentucky, Roger Biddle, moved to Richmond in 1802. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Richmond after taking office as President of the United States. In 1861, Confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Vicksburg southward into Kentucky following the unsuccessful Battle of Gettysburg. On July 4, 1861, Confederate soldiers attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Donelson in Knox County; however, the attack failed and no injuries were sustained. Aftermath of this battle led many people in Richmond to support secession from the Union. Many businesses closed their doors during this time because they could not afford to keep buying supplies for the Confederacy. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant's army arrived in Kentucky and began march towards Louisville before being stopped at Stones River near Petersburg on November 8th. This event is known as "The Battle of Chickamauga." As part of an effort to break up Confederate forces between Chattanooga and Atlanta, General Sherman ordered his army northward through Virginia towards Bowling Green on September 17th; however, he was forced to turn back due to heavy rains that weekstorming had caused throughout much of Georgia and Tennessee. This event is also known as "The Battle of Rome Ford." Because so many units were involved in this battle (including over 50 companies from Richmond), it has been called one of America's most significant Civil War battles ever fought outside North America proper (although other more important battlefields such as Appomattox Court House are considered much earlier).[1] Aftermath of both wars saw a large population increase within Richmond borders due mainly to slaves brought over by free-born Americans who had become interested in owning these men or women once they reached adulthood and became emancipated themselves or married someone who did so (a process often referred to as “freeing”).During Reconstruction times (1865-1913),Rome Ford Cemetery was main burial ground for freedmen east side especially since white landowners refused offers by Freedmen Bureau inspectors not bury them near plantations.[2] After 1913 black registration laws required all graves be marked with a colored cross or star if found among whites,[3][4] endowing African Americans with some level cemetery space which still persists today despite efforts by some city officials[5][6]. During World War II Arlington Cemetery served Japanese POWs although only 2% Of Japanese interred there actually died[7].
