Radocliff is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Radcliff is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Radcliff was made on July 20, 1792 by three families of German immigrants who had come overland from Pennsylvania. The name "Radcliffe" originally derived from the nearby village of Oxford and meant "a place where people could trade." In 1824, local landowner James Kapp donated 640 acres (2 km²) to the town for a public square and schoolhouse. By 1829, the town had built a courthouse and four churches. A sawmill was added to the community in 1830; it continued in operation until 1906. During Reconstruction times (1870-1927), Radcliffe experienced several periods of economic prosperity as various businesses grew rich offthe labor of its inhabitants. However, this prosperity came to an end when railroads arrived and began transporting more goods than ever before to market; consequently, jobs dried up and poverty increased among many residents. A fire destroyed much of Radcliffe in 1901; however, reconstruction began almost immediately with new construction that included a water works and post office buildings. In 1934, a library was also built within the confines of what would become known as "The Olde Towne". In 1945-46 renovation work took place on Main Street which resulted in the addition of two stores onto one side creating what is now known as The Marketplace across from First Baptist Church (now Second Baptist). At that time Radcliffe's population numbered 2200 with about 50% being female! After World War II ended there were no more military veterans living within easy commuting distance so many people slowly lost interest or moved away during this time period described as "the tough decade". Most people here still spoke English but few knew how to read or write so communication between locals ceased completely which led to some pretty developed social isolation & loneliness during those years... something we take for granted today but back then it felt like everyone knew everyone else & nobody wanted anything to do with you
Radcliff was founded in 1792 by Captain John Cline, who named it after his home town of Radcliffe, England. The first store and post office were built in 1802. In the 1830s, a sawmill and grist mill were built. The town prospered until the Civil War, when it was destroyed by Union troops.
