The National Guard of Paducah, Kentucky was organized on November 1, 1861. At the time, Paducah was a small town in central Kentucky. The first units of the National Guard were raised in response to the Civil War and were known as the "Bluegrass Legion." The Guard began its operations under the command of Brigadier General David S. Rankin. The unit grew rapidly and by 1865 there were over 100 soldiers in the Guard. By 1868, a regiment had been raised from Paducah's citizens and by 1870 it numbered 2,500 men strong. In 1872, Major General John J. Pershing authorized detachments of National Guardsmen to serve in Mexico during its war with United States Mexico City mayor Antonio López de Santa Anna. This action initiated an era of national guard service that lasted for two decades. In 1912, Paducah became home to one of America's first airfields when Lexington Army Air Field was opened west of town on land donated by Ayer County landowners Harry Fenton and Edwin Poeppelmeyer. With this new airport came increased military activity which led to the creation of a separate brigade within the National Guard called Special Troops (later Airborne Brigade) on October 1, 1938; however no airfield or troops ever arrived until World War II when Lexington Army Air Field became Military Air Transport Command Base Lexington-Fort Worth AF #2(C-47s). Paducah, Kentucky is a town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 14,895 at the 2010 census. Paducah is the most populous city in Jefferson County and home to the Paducah-Jefferson County Regional Airport. It is also home to the Paducah-Monticello Metropolitan Statistical Area which has a population of 24,611 as of 2016. The first people to live in what is now Paducah were Native American hunter-gatherers who lived on what are now the University Park and Monticello neighborhoods. The area that would become Paducah was settled by land grantees from Virginia on November 3, 1792. The town was named for General James Wilkinson (1748–1827), an American Revolutionary War officer and delegate from Kentucky to the Confederation Convention in Philadelphia. In 1810, when Kentucky became a state, Paduch broke away from Virginia and seceded from that state. On February 15, 1819, James Kapperts arrived with his party of men seeking new lands west of Louisville under the treaty known as Treaty of Paris following the Louisiana Purchase; he intended to establish a post near what is now downtown Paducah for traders and farmers looking for better prospects for their crops or ranching operations than what they could find along the river's banks east of Louisville. When he reached Georgetown Pike—now US 31st Street—near present day Monticello Avenue (then US 421), he discovered rich bottomland hereabouts that had never been surveyed or explored before because it lay within Indian Territory! A few years later another group led by Isaac Shelby set out Surveyor John Capps survey these same lands around Georgetown Pike/Monticello Avenue - including today's downtown core - after purchasing them from Kapperts' heirs some time prior thereto This started what would be called "the Platt Land Rush" which saw many entrepreneurs start settlements here who soon developed rich coal seams and other resources underlying this virgin soil For nearly two decades no one came looking except speculators active primarily within early oil companies such as Ewing Oil Company But then oil prices went up and development began anew beginning with Building No 1 (renamed Madison Place) being built in 1935 by entrepreneur Ray Stroud In 1969 developer Thomson Coal Mines Inc., bought Building No 2 off Lexington Road adjacent to current day First National Bank building complete with its own compressor station dotted throughout its acres providing electricity for businesses until 1984 when it closed down due to environmental concerns By 1989 there were over 100 businesses operating here employing over 1800 people generating revenues totaling $2 billion annually making this one of America’s most vibrant economic communities dating back more than eighty years
