When the Nicholasville Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1873, there were only a few handguns in the area. The club members decided to start purchasing rifles for use at local rifle shoots.eventually, the club had enough rifles to start assemble their own firearms. The first gun assemblies were done by hand, but soon some of the earliest shooters in Nicholasville started using this process as well. In 1876, they purchased their first machinegun and began using it at local rifle shoots. Over time, they also amassed an impressive collection of handguns including revolvers, shotguns and even pistols. In 1916, the NRA founded its National Shooting Sports Foundation which allowed member organizations to sell guns through organized sales events statewide. This made membership more affordable and opened up new opportunities for shooting enthusiasts across America. In 1928-29, the club acquired their very first heavy machinegun which helped them become one of the most successful shooting clubs in Kentucky! Today, Nicholasville Rifle and Pistol Club continues to be one of the leading firearms clubs in Kentucky thanks to their rich history and passion for shot putting!

In 1907, the county commissioners decided to rename the town to honor General George Washington Carver who had served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and as President of Tuskegee University.
