The Newport Navy Yard was a naval facility located in Newport, Kentucky, United States. It was active from 1903 until 1994 and served as the main Naval Base for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The yardemployed over 24,000 sailors and soldiers during its time as an important part of the American military system. The facility played a significant role in American naval history throughout the 19th century. In 1812, Commodore James K. Polk sent USS Constitution to blockade Spanish ports in Florida after reports that Spain was selling weapons to Mexico. The navyyard built Constitution off of bricks provided by local residents. After President James K. Polk ordered the construction of USS Enterprise in 1841 to protect Louisville from French attack, Newport became the major shipyards for America’s Navy. In 1903, Newport became home to the United States Naval Academy when it moved from Annapolis, Maryland. With enrollment reaching 1000 students in 1908–09, new buildings were constructed at nearby Middletown Naval Air Station on land donated by Jethro Tull and his wife Nellie Bogan Tull (the mother of Justin McCarthy). At first only officers could attend USNA; however, enrollment soon reached 3000 students per year by 1915 and 4000 per year by 1920-21 owing to expansion at USNA and Middletown NAS combined with increased undergraduate enrollments at rival institutions such as Yale University and Princeton University both located nearby on New England's campuses respectively (see Navy Enrollment History). During World War II, many naval functions were transferred from Annapolis to Newport including radars/electronics research at MIT; aircraft design; development of submarine warfare; amphibious warfare; commando operations ashore against enemy forces afloat or ashore on land) all within eyeshot of Washington D.C.. Many famous ships were built here including Roosevelt's battleship USS Quincy (1940), Japanese destroyer Yarrow (1945), HMS Belfast (1946)—the last two being sunk during World War II—and numerous submarines including PT boat HMAS Russell (1948), HNLMS Sceptre(1949) and LPH sailing ship PPM-1(1960). Newport was founded on the Monongahela River in 1792 by General James Wilkinson. The town was originally named for Newport, RI, which Wilkinson had visited when he was commanding a brigade in the American Revolutionary War. After the war, Wilkinson moved his headquarters to Newport and began to develop the town into a commercial center. In 1821, he founded the Kentucky Colonization Society to bring over new European settlers to Kentucky as a way of promoting economic development in that state. By 1830, Newport had become one of the most important slave-holding towns in Kentucky. However, by 1840, after emancipation of slaves in Kentucky and throughout America took effect, many white people abandoned Newport due to its slave-owning population and lack of opportunities for African Americans. In 1852, Mr. John Ladd opened what is now known as Ladd's Oil Field on land that once belonged to General James Wilkinson. This oil field would later become one of the largest oil companies in America and produce more than 1 million barrels of oil per day during World War II. The city also became an important industrial center during this time with heavy manufacturing such as bicycles and radios being produced there. In 1956, however, following passage of legislation designed to reduce pollution from industry within cities such as Cincinnati and Louisville), Newport lost some of its stature as an engine for economic development within centralKentucky because it became one of several cities targeted for closure pursuant to this program. However, since 2000s growth has resumed at both local levels and statewide level with major investments coming from private enterprise including expansions at Ladd's Oil Field (now BP) along with other new businesses announced recently such as PNC Banknorthwest moving their headquarters from Cincinnati into downtown Newport just blocks away from where General James Wilkinson once lived himself!
