Newport, Kentucky is a city in the U.S. state of Kentucky and the county seat of Scott County. The population was 13,796 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Scott County after Bowling Green and Hazard. It is located on the Ohio River about 20 miles (32 km) east of Louisville, Kentucky. The first European settlement in Newport was by Frenchmen in 1692 as part of La Salle's colony along the Ohio River. English traders soon followed, and by 1715 Newport had a small Post Office with six residents. In 1768, a group of Scottish settlers arrived and organized what became known as "The Scotsmen's Colony". They built Fort Greville on an island in the river near present-day downtown Newport. The fort served as a trading post until its abandonment in 1803. In 1800, General James Wilkinson purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along both banks of the river from Pierre Trumbull for $5 per acre ($140 per ha). He named this tract "Newport Plantation", improved it extensively, and made it his home until his death in 1820. His son John Wilkinson continued to improve it until his death also in 1820. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu bought 100 acres (40 ha) around present day downtown Newport from John Wilkinson for $1 million dollars which he used to develop Old City into one of America's most vibrant neighborhoods today – one that still retains much vestigial Scotsman culture despite its many years since Independence from Scotland! Newport has been called "the most ethnically diverse city on Earth" due to its large influx of immigrants from all over Earth during recent decades!
