Newport is a small town located in the extreme eastern corner of Kentucky, close to the Ohio River. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It has been rated one of the " happiest" small towns in America by Forbes magazine. The first Europeans to come to Newport were French traders and missionaries who set up a trading post here in 1765. The community grew quickly, thanks to its location on the river and its easy access to goods brought over by boat from other parts of Kentucky and Virginia. In 1802, General James K. Polk discovered coal mines here and began developing Newport into an important transportation center for coal and other minerals long used by Kentucky miners. Newport's success as a mining town led to its growth as a residential community during the years following World War II. Many people from Newport moved into nearby cities during that time, but many more remained here until after the community's decline during the late 20th century due to rapid population growth in surrounding municipalities. However, recent development has restored some hope for Newport while also creating challenges for future residents: In 2012, construction began on what will be one of America's largest freeways – Interstate 65 – just south of town; this will change how much traffic through Newport occurs each day and could lead to increased crime rates if it weren't countered with new development around town

Newport is a town in southeastern Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Newport County and the Combined Statistical Area of Newport–Frankfort, KY. The first permanent settler in what is now Newport was James Webb in 1792. He built a cabin on the then-newcomer's Landing Plantation about two miles (3 km) east of present-day downtown Newport. Webb's home still stands and can be visited as part of the city's Heritage Trail. In 1798, John Reynolds became the first white man to set foot in what is now Newport when he journeyed upriver from Ratliffstown on his way to purchase land from Native Americans. He named his new settlement after his friend and patron saint, Saint John Baptist, which soon became an important commercial center due to its natural harbor and rich fishing grounds. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into nearby Frankfort during the American Civil War in order to protect that city from Union forces under General George Armstrong Custer; however, much of Knoxville had already been taken by Union troops by this time so only a small amount of food remained for Jackson's forces. As a result of this need for food supplies and because there was no railroad near at hand to get him anything else where he could send it,Jackson orderedimented one local blacksmith named Elijah Holmes to build an electrical wirebridge over the Cumberland River so that wagon trains could cross without having their baggage derailed or lost along the way This event marks one of just three times since Confederation that federal authorities have authorized private enterprise specifically for military purposes (the others being Jules Ferry's crossing of Lake Pontchartrain with artillery equipment in 1845 and Robert E. Lee's crossing of Appomattox River with Confederate soldiers in 1865). Newport was founded in 1786 by the brothers James and John Robertson. The town was named after King George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, Virginia. The first settlers were mechanics and farmers who built homes on the wharf behind the local schoolhouse. In 1814, a post office was established in Newport and it remained in operation until it closed in 1971. Newport's early growth came from its location on the Ohio River. The town developed as a transportation hub because of its access to water resources and railroads. It became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century due to its production of shoes, flour, soap, cheese and other goods. During World War II, Newport played an important role as a naval base for Allied forces located on Kentucky's eastern border. The city also hosted significant events such as Hurricane Betsy's landfall in 1944 and Presidential Inauguration Day in 1961.
