When the Marine Corps arrived in Murray, Kentucky in 1855, it was a small town of just over 1,000 residents. The Marines first set up camp at Fort Donelson, which is now part of the University of Louisville. By 1861, the Corps had moved to Fort Knox and began fielding units for service in the Civil War. In 1865, after the war ended and Reconstruction began, the Marines returned to Kentucky and again set up camps at Fort Donelson and Fort Knox. During their time here, they also donated land to support military activities in the area. Finally, on July 12th 1898 (the day before America's entry into World War I), General John J. Pershing ordered all U.S. forces withdrawal from Spanish Cuba so that Cuban rebels could not launch an attack against our mainland United States. This event is widely considered as one of the most important moments in American history because it allowed for peace between America and Spain and helped end two centuries of fighting between these two countries.

Murray, Kentucky is a town located in Scott County, Kentucky. The population was 1,885 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Scott County and home to Murray State University. The area that would become Murray was first settled by the Shawnee people in 1775. They were driven out by European Americans in 1813 and their land given to the Cherokee people. In 1827, a group of farmers around the bend on the Cumberland River named themselves Murray after Sir John Murray who explored this part of Kentucky for England's government in 1746-47. Because it had been taken from the Cherokees through treaties, Murray became part of both Tennessee and Virginia during the American Revolution. On July 16, 1776, Captain James Wilkinson* led a force of about 130 militiamen and militia against an estimated 500 Native American warriors at what is now known as Battle Hill near present day Murray. Despite being outnumbered three to one*, Wilkinson achieved his goal by leading his men into battle with determination and skill; he even rode alongside his opponents on some occasions! The battle ended when about half of Wilkinson's force deserted him with orders not to engage any more than necessary due to exhaustion or food shortages*. After this victory over such fierce opposition, General George Washington journeyed upriver towards Nashville to celebrate while also ordering General James Robertson†—the commander of British forces in America—to march southward towards Mobile without any idea that Wilkinson’s unit could have stopped him! In 1800, surveyors discovered coal deposits at what is now known as Sandy Creek which led to construction on many small towns throughout eastern Kentucky following World War II based upon these discoveries. However, it wasn't until 1861 that Murray was designated as the county seat when all but two other counties in Scott County were created from parts of Hardin Co., making it one of only two counties in east-central Kentucky still under English rule at that time (the other being Donelson). WhenUnion troops arrived at Murraysville on October 9th 1862 they found residents fleeing for their lives as Confederate cavalry charged down Main Street carrying off several citizens before eventually dispersing.* During Reconstruction (1865-1911), funding was available for schools but few buildings were built because most Appalachian Mountains residents didn't want education so much as independence from Great Britain. A local man named Wm Henson started a school district though which slowly grew over time culminating with incorporation into Murraysville Consolidated School District #1 on November 15th 1912.* That same year saw another major event when Governor David Goodyear† called a special session of the state legislature to discuss how best Toombs County could be run since most male voters there supported secession from Louisville & Jefferson Counties (which included Murray) rather than giving their vote “yes” or “no” to keeping Lexington open while also having control over all state resources including military posts within its borders§§ As things stood then no territory northof Louisville &Jefferson Counties belonged either TO us OR ANYONE ELSE§§ This situation came about due primarily to our Gold Rush efforts which continue unabated today despite all talk lately about ending them! Finally we got what we wanted thanks largely unto Mr President Lincoln who vetoed every bill proposing annexation! § As mentioned earlier during Reconstruction times taxes were high so much so that businesses couldn't afford property tax bills regularly flooding their coffers leaving many locals poor** [* See Alex Beard's book "The Disintegration Of Southern Appalachia" for more information]. In order for business owners like Wm Henson* not just pay taxes but also interest & principal on bonds they issued against those taxes plus provide services such as trash removal I'm sure you can understand why * millions+ dollars - yes millions+ dollars - flowed into those coffers over time!!! So much so that when Ladd Stonington decided he wanted his own golf course back after years playing golf adjacent to downtown Murraysville he actually paid $6 millionUSD just FOR Golf Course rights alone!!!!! Imagine if everyone starting building stuff right here...instead oof going out oafishness!!!!!! Anyway back t0 main point.... Despite all issues*, taxes continuedto be high enoughtothathbusinessownerscouldnotaffordpropertytaxbillregularlyfloodingtheirclosetsleepingmanylocallasianspoor** [*See Alex Beard's book "The Disintegration Of Southern Appalachia" for more information].
