Murray, Kentucky is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The community was named for General James Murray and his wife Eliza (née Pickett). The first settler in the area that would become Murray was James Bledsoe. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 127 in 1827. This location would be where the town started to form around him and other early settlers. In 1828, John Cavanaugh settled in what is today Murray and built a log cabin on land he had purchased from James Bledsoe. This site served as their home until 1830 when they moved to what is now State Route 447 east of present-day Murray. By 1835, there were 10 families living in Murraytownships with just one store and two homes. In 1840, Wm Henson opened a grocery store in present day Murray which became an important part of the community's economy until it closed its doors in 1922 due to prohibitionist policies by then Johnson County Sheriff John Peebles Sr.. A post office called Mildred was established atMurray on October 15, 1850, by Lavinia Peebles; it operated until May 24, 1953. On December 1st 1860, pioneer Ole Christian Sorenson bought 3 acres of land south of present day Murraytownships from Jno Atherton for $10 per acre; this property served as Sorenson's farm until his death in 1886 which left his farm to his son Amos who developed it into current day Murraytownships . It should be noted that when most people think about "Murray", they either think about downtown or rural areas such as eastern side of town off SR 447 - these are all incorrect conceptions because after years of growth & development within downtown core & surrounding rural areas - modern day Murray proper began forming circa 1870s when SR 447 intersected KY 9th Street
