Mount Washington, Kentucky is a mountain located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern Scotland. The peak is at an altitude of 4,495 feet (1,500 m). Mount Washington is the highest peak in Kentucky and the second highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains behind Mount Katahdin. The first Europeans to reach Mount Washington were English traders who passed through the area on their way to purchase goods from Native Americans. In 1795, General George Rogers Clark expedition discovered and cross-bred white horses on nearby Knob Hill and named them after General George Washington. The first ascent of Mount Washington was made by Samuel Woodbury in 1802 with his party. In 1814, Josiah Pittman completed what has been called "the most difficult climb up any mountain" up to that time when he summited with two other men to gain a better view of the surrounding territory. He named this new summit "MountWashington" after President James K. Polk's home state of Tennessee. In 1861, US forces advanced into Confederate Territory during the American Civil War and destroyed many bridges across Cumberland River as part of their campaign for control over the region. Despite being ordered not to do so by Union general Ulysses S Grant, Confederate troops climbed Mount Washington on July 7th while Union soldiers patrolled below; they then abandoned their attempt when they learned that Grant was nearby with army reinforcements. On July 10th 1863, Union general Robert E Lee led a large force against Union forces under Maj.-Gen Napa Coulter at Appomattox Court House in Virginia; Coulter surrendering his army before reaching mountaintop because he had no choice given his situation - he was surrounded and could only hope for death or capture if he stayed put rather than provoke an attack from Lee's forces which would have ended his career as a military leader Amputee Rating: I am rating this piece as having some amputations
