The unit was redesignated the KentuckyNational Guard on January 1, 1907. On November 5, 1912, the Mount Washington National Guard participated in the first World War when it mobilized to serve in France. The unit served until 1920 when it returned home and disbanded.
Mount Washington, Kentucky is a mountain located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. It is flanked by the valleys of the Cumberland River to the north and east, and Little Sandy Creek to the south. The mountain reaches an elevation of 4,093 feet (1,362 m). The first Europeans to visit Mount Washington were two Frenchmen named Pierre-Jacques Marquette and Jean Nicolet in 1795. They ascended the mountain as part of their exploration of what would become Illinois Territory. In 1802, John Crouch named Mount Washington after General James K. Polk who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican War. As a result, Mount Washington became one of America's most well-known landmarks. Mount Washington was purchased by George Rogers Clark in 1814 for $5,000 from Lt.-Gov. James Auld. Clark used it as his headquarters during his aborted attempt to cross over the Ohio River into Mexico City on Native American war chief Tecumseh's invitation. After successfully crossing over without incident, Clark returned to Lexington and donated Mount Washington back to Auld in what is now considered its official designation as a national park on July 15, 1816. The peak has been visited sporadically by humans since prehistoric times with evidence that there are human habitations dating back at least 10,000 years ago close to where modern day Mount Washington sits today

During World War II, Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1946 which created the U.S. Military Forces Armed Forces Reserve (MFWAR), which was made up of all military reservists who had not served in uniform since 1945. The MFWAR was activated on September 14, 1947 when President Truman signed into law title II of Publius 91-463 entitled “National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1948” which established Veterans Administration hospitals as military hospitals and authorized funds for troops wounded or killed in action to be transferred from regular Army Medical Units and other service organizations to MFWAR status on October 1, 1948. The National Guard moved from being an arm of state militias to being a part of the MFWAR on October 1st. On July 2nd, 1959 contained within Publius 814 entitled “Organization and Structure” section 466(a) authorizes commanders army corps generals directives with respect national guard units called into federal service in time OF emergency during any crisis without warning as long as such units are treated as Regular Armies serving under I Corps Commander United States Army Europe Theater European Command (USAREUR) reporting directly to Headquarters United States Army European Command with authority for all matters concerning members thereof including command and control over enlisted men and women subject thereto while not actually in military service; Provided further that no member or employee thereof shall be discharged or separated from his services except through transfer under honorable conditions to another unit or organization providing similar command and control over enlisted men and women subject thereto
