Mount Washington was a peak in central Kentucky that was the highest point in the state at an elevation of 4,320 feet (1,500 meters). The mountain was first sighted by Europeans in 1592 when they explored what is now Kentucky. In 1795, James K. Polk described Mount Washington as "the most conspicuous peak in all this region." The mountain had been visited by American Indians before white men arrived in the area. Spanish traders and travelers also photographed and noted the summit in 1802. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson placed an order for 1,000 rifles from John Brown of Harper’s Ferry to be used against British forces garrisoning Fort Donelson on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. On July 22, 1814, Jackson left Memphis with his army and reached Nashville on July 26. He knew that if he could take Fort Donelson then he could cut off British reinforcements from Chattanooga and possibly drive them out of Tennessee altogether. On September 12th, General Jackson's army positioned itself around Fort Donelson according to plan but instead of finding reinforcement from Canada or United States units under General George H. Thomas there were only about 20 militiamen guarding the fortifications which included artillery pieces manned by three companies of infantry commanded by Captain Gideon Welles and Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Stevens. Just after sunset on September 13th a large force under Major-General David Beauregard came down the river valley towards Fort Donelsonsupported by six cannonade batteries numbering seventy eight guns each – more than any other force assembled within reach of the fortifications! Although outnumbered two to one by Confederate forces commanded by Major-General Braxton Bragg at nearby Missionary Ridge (7 miles away), Beauregard crossed over into Union territory without being attacked! What followed next is still talked about today as one of history's greatest tactical feats! The Union cannons opened fire at almost pointblank range killing or wounding many Confederate soldiers while some managed to get back onto their horses and escape! Aftermath: More than 200 Confederates were dead including Major-General Braxton Bragg himself; twentyfour enemy officers were captured; five hundred rounds were expended; eleven cannons were destroyed; four horses were killed; five hundred men became prisoners – plus $10 thousand Dollars worth of plunder taken from Camp Ross Cemetery where bodies lay strewn throughout acres of scrubby ground] The battle marked a turning point for both sides as it demonstrated how well equipped and trained their respective armies had become since the Battle of Bull Run two years earlier where Federal troops had lost 30% percent casualties while Confederate losses amounted to over 100%. Also during this period Mount Washington saw limited use due to its high altitude making it difficult for artillery commanders to target troops atop its slopes directly rather than spread firepower across much lowerground terrain subjecting these same troops also to sniper attacks which can numerous fatalities among unguarded individuals particularly during low light conditions
