The Marine Gifts of Mount Washington, Kentucky is a long and detailed history of marine gifts given to the town by large numbers of maritime men and women from all over the United States during the late 1800s. These gifts included vessels, tools, fishing gear and even petunias! The town was founded in 1792 by Captain John Sisson and his family on a small island in present day Mount Washington County. The island became known as Sisson's Island because of its few virgin trees that were accessible only to Captains John Sisson and James Brown. In 1811, Captain Christopher Gadsden purchased the island from Captain Sisson for $1,000. Gadsden named the island "Mount Washington" in honor of George Washington who had ordered General Forbes's invasion of Maryland in 1780. In 1819, Captains Isaac Norris (of Louisville) and Augustus Hays (of Lexington) donated two schooners called "Hays' Flounder" and "Norris' Dolphin" to be used as storeships at Mount Washington while they built a dock thereon. The first store was opened on July 1, 1825. This donation made Mount Washington one of the earliest towns in Kentucky to have a permanent storehouse for goods needed by its citizens. In 1840, Mrs. Caryl Churchill gave her home on Banks Street to become an inn which she operated until her death in 1865. From 1870-1885, about 250 families patronized Mrs. Churchill's establishment each week providing employment for local residents during these difficult times caused by Civil War violence throughout Kentucky especially around Lexington where most businesses closed due to Union raids authorized by President Andrew Johnson . It was not until 1915 when Drury Locker erected the first post office building within Mount Washington township limits . It can still be seen today on Main Street just north of US Highway 421 near mile marker 14 . For many years it served as headquarters for mail delivery service between Louisville and Lexington . In 1935-36 it also functioned as a branch library for MtWashington village with books being brought into town on horseback ! In 1951 it was moved upriver to its current location behind First National Bank opposite Fourth Street Baptist Church .. Today it houses both the Chamber Music Hall & Gallery along with several classrooms including ISD art classes !! After World War II , mount washington began enjoying more attention than ever before due largely to four very important individuals: Mayor Fenton Ness; Naval Lieutenant Commander Harry Wright (USNRretired); & Mr.. Royce Winton (RETIRED). They actively promoted development within city limits with responsibility for planning Streetscape improvements such as new sidewalks & bus stops; street renaming; installation of new streetlights; erection or replacement of flagpoles; etc., etc., etc., culminating in their successful campaign which resulted in creation or reestablishment of public works commissions within city limits responsible for various aspects such as water supply system engineering & maintenance; beautification projects such as flower gardens (& later greenhouses), light rail systems installation or retrofitting existing stations/lines; affordable housing developments including homeless shelters/campsites Program Manager Clyde Bardwell has been carrying out Mayor Fenton Ness’ vision since he took office in 2009
