Some of the earliest records of coffee consumption can be found in 1824 when John Sowell bought some beans from the Dutchman Pieter de Wit. The first reported sale of coffee beans to Americans was at the 1842 Lexington Fair. In 1862, General Donelson purchased some coffee beans from Nicholas Metzger and began shipping them to Fort Donelson, Tennessee. In 1865, Major General George Halleck ordered all soldiers stationed at Fort Donelson to purchase one pound of coffee each week. This order led to the development of Fort Donelson Coffee Company which operated until 1922. In 1925, the Mount Washington Coffee Company was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Luther Vandross with help from their friend, Senator Hiram Johnson II. The company made its first shipment of coffee for retail sale on October 10th that year. By 1930, the Mount Washington Coffee Company had become one of Kentucky's leading commercial importers and marketers of high-quality coffee products

Mount Washington, Kentucky is a mountain located in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. It is the highest peak in the county and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The peak has been called "the crowned jewel of Kentucky" and has offered Views from Every Step since its establishment in 1792. The peak was first visited by Europeans on July 14, 1792 when Gen. George Rogers Clark's force passed through Hardin County on their way to raid Fort Loudoun on nearby Cumberland Gap. At that time Mount Washington was considered a small hill just south of Georgetown. By 1800 it had become an important landmark with views of much of central Kentucky including Cincinnati and even Louisville across the Ohio River. In 1814 Jefferson Davis became president of the United States and began pushing for plans to build a road upmountain to connect Baltimore with Richmond via Lexington and Nashville. He directed his secretary of war, James K. Polk, to find a suitable location for what would eventually be called Mount Washington National Monument (later renamed Mount Vernon National Cemetery). On October 15, 1825 Congress passed an act establishing Mount Washington as part of that monument along with four other national parks: Shenandoah National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Acadia National Park and Canyonlands National Park. Mount Washington was opened to visitors on April 20th, 1930 following funding from donations from many individuals and groups including Interurban Railway Co., Coca-Cola Bottling Company founders John D'Arcy McGee and William Coleman Youngblood Jr., General Electric co-founder Lucius Noyes Sr., Waco oilman Clarence King Jr., Jethro Tull (founder of English rock band Yes), Edwin Hargrave (founder editor/publisher/owner The New York Times), Charles Fenton (president Ford Motor Company) and more than 1 million people who attended what is now known as the "Mount Washington Open Air Festival." That event still takes place annually at noon EDT at McCormick Place in downtown Harrisonburg during Mayfair Weekend - a three day celebration culminating with performances by local bands such as Bluegrass music legends Joe Bonamassa & Kenny Vaughan & Jerry Lee Lewis & Many More!

Mount Washington is a mountain located in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. The peak, which reaches an elevation of 4,853 feet (1,524 m), was first climbed by George Mount and his party on July 5, 1814. After reaching the summit, the group discovered that they had reached an impassable snowfield. They turned back and returned to their starting point. In 1817, John Custer led a force of Seventh Cavalry soldiers against the Sioux on the Upper Big Horn River in what is now Montana. While atop Mount Washington, Custer observed a herd of buffalo grazing below him and decided to pursue them instead of continuing downriver. He later described his experience on Mount Washington as "the most thrilling moment of my life." Mount Washington has been used as a location for many films and television shows over the years including: The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King (2002), All InTheFamily (2006-2009), Buffalo Bill's Wild West (1912-1914), Game Of Thrones (2011-2015), Silicon Valley (2016-) and Stranger Things (2017-2018).
