The history of marine gift giving in Mayfield, Kentucky goes back more than 100 years. In 1907, the first Marine Corps Officers' Mess was established in what is now the Mayfield Municipal Building. Marines from all over the country donated food and drinks for these meetings, which were important occasions for networking and exchanging information about military life. In 1958, Marine Lt. Col. John Dillard founded the Marine Museum in honor of his father, a U.S. Navy Commander who had served aboard USS Lexington during World War II. At that time, there was no museum dedicated to maritime history in Kentucky—until then! The Dillard Museum has been educating people about naval aviation and shipbuilding throughout its existence; it's now one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. In 1970, when KYMarine became an official state organization with its own governing body, it decided to commemorate our maritime roots by sponsoring a statewide contest called "KYMarine Royalty get a Taste!" This contest allowed citizens of all ages to taste Rhode Island lobster at various restaurants throughout their local area (and even win prizes)! The event was such a success that it was continued each year until 1984! Now every Fourth of July weekend we have another event called "A Taste of Marblehead" at several different restaurants around town! This time we're featuring Maryland crab cakes!
