Mayfield is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Mayfield" comes from the word "mahal," meaning "a meadow." The first settlers in what is now Mayfield were migrants from North Carolina. They began to arrive in 1818 and by 1825 there were twenty-one people living in what is now Mayfield. In 1827, they built a grist mill on the present site of Mayfield High School. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1861, but the foundation still stands today as a historical marker. In 1865, three brothers – James W., John H., and George A – founded Mount Zion Baptist Church located on current day Old Main Street and Broadway. One of their first pastors was Robert Patterson who served until 1886 when he was replaced by Isaac Asbury Sr.. During this time period available land for farming only went up to about two miles from where it currently stands due to flooding caused by heavy rains that year. When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, many residents of Mayfield voted for him because he promised not to raise taxes without Congressional approval which would have hurt their economy. At that time most farming took place along streams or rivers which allowed farmers plenty of water access and also provided shade during hot days or during times of drought when crops might not grow very well otherwise. After Lincoln's election, some farmers decided to move away from Independence because they thought Lincoln's policies were going too far with new tariffs and other measures he put into effect during his term as President including abolishing slavery which had been legal here since 1795 although many people did not want this change to happen because it would have deprived them of certain economic opportunities). However others decided to stay because they believed Lincoln would eventually give them back their rights after being passed through Congress like he said he would do back then! Mayfield, Kentucky was founded in 1785 by Captain John Mayfield. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the first U.S. ambassador to France and later became a presidential candidate in 1896. The town began as a small settlement on the east bank of the Kentucky River, about six miles from present-day Mayfield. In 1811, Captain Mayfield donated land to build a courthouse and jail in honor of his friend, President James K. Polk. The first courthouse building was built in 1814 and is still used today as part of the courthouse complex located at 270 Spring Street in downtown Mayfield. The town continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak during the 1800s when it had a population of over 2,000 people. However, by 1830, Mayfield had declined sharply and only contained about 100 residents remaining by 1840. By 1850, however, the town had once again become an important cultural center with several stores and three churches operating withinits borders. Mayfield experienced another significant growth period during reconstruction following World War II which saw an influx of new residents and businesses into the town followed by increased development throughout the ensuing decades resulting in an increasing population size by 1970 which peaked at over 4,000 people before declining slightly to 3,700 individuals by 2000 . Today there are less than 1 hundred citizens remaining living withinmayfields limits making it one of America's smallest towns . However , through its history and legacy that has been left behind such as its rich cultural heritage; its architecture including both historic buildings dating back to 1814-1830 as well as newer construction spanning recent years; along with its unique community values - such as support for local arts & culture - mayfield has preserved much of what makes this city unique while also maintaining some basic functions such as water supply & fire protection that are essential for any community ..
Mayfield was founded in 1802 by John Mayfield and his family. The first settlers were Methodists, who named the town after their preacher, John Mayfield Sr. In 1824, the community joined the Presbyterian Church and it has remained a part of that denomination ever since. Mayfield is also home to one of America's oldest cotton gin mills, which began operations in 1825. The mill continued operation until 1971. The town developed into an agricultural center during the 19th century and produced large quantities of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, rice, pigs and hogs. Today much of Mayfield's economy comes from its location within easy access to Interstate 65 and other transportation corridors.
