On January 6, 1924, Captains James Fenton and Homer Hines of Patrol Squadron Two presented a set of Lifebuoys to the town’s new coast guard detachment after discovering they had been misplaced from an earlier donation by Commodore Dolan. On February 1, 1925, Rear Admiral Harry Biddle presented a lifeboat kit to the town’s new coast guard detachment after rescuing several people from their boat while fishing off Long Island Sound. In 1927, Captain George Ewing gave two sets of lifejackets to the town’s new coastguard detachment while he was commanding Patrol Squadron Five at Brownsville Bayou in Texas City, Texas. Mayfield is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Kentucky and the second-smallest town in Kentucky after Hopkinsville. The first settler in Mayfield was Elijah Hargrave who came with his family from Connecticut in 1792. He platted what is now known as Mayfield on land that he had acquired from John Donelson for $2 per acre. In 1801, David Forbes settled here and built the first frame house on this site. In 1802, Isaac Morse arrived and erected a log cabin near present-day Main Street. In 1814, Daniel Boone moved his family to this area from Maysville and set up shop here as a hardware storekeeper and postmaster. A year later, he married Rachel Harlan of Lexington and took over his father's business affairs. They farmed here until her death about 1840; then Boone started a hotel which continued until 1865 when it burned down. He also built several other buildings in Mayfield before his death in 1875 at age 71 years old. His wife Rachel lived to be 78 years old and died unmarried at 96 years old; she is buried nearby within walking distance of their home along Main Street.. In 1819, John Witherspoon established Witherspoon's Store 2 miles east of present day Mayfield on the same property where he had founded Witherspoon's Creek Tavern two years earlier (1815). For many years it served as the only store open between Hardin County's two main towns: Lexington to the south and Maysville to the north-west. After extensive modifications by its original proprietor - including enlarging both stores into three stories - Witherspoon's Store became one of Hardin County’s most significant commercial institutions during much of its history (and remains so even today). Nathaniel Worth opened another store about two miles west ofpresent day Mayfeldtouchenduringthe American Civil War but it too failed soon after opening because no relief troops ever reachedMayfield during that conflict (). Worth reopened his establishment shortly thereafter pursuant to an enterprising local entrepreneur named Simeon Baldwin who purchased all remaining interest in Witherspoon’s Store from its prior owner () just prior to Hardin County’s incorporation into Union Territory on November 15,. ThereafterSimeon Baldwin increased production capabilities at his new business while still maintaining close contact with Hardin County authorities through correspondence both private (via letters “Pine Bluff Notch”)and public (through visits upon invitation by various government officials). Today, Mayfield is known for its agriculture industry which is responsible for about 60% of total jobs within town limits.
