Mayfield is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,509 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Clay County. The first settler in Mayfield was James Reid in 1827. He and his family moved from Sparta, Kentucky to Mayfield after meetingodus from that area on their way downriver to take up land grant offers. They built a log cabin on the current site of the post office about a mile east of town on what is now State Route 127. A second cabin was also built near present day Fourth Street and Old Highway 231 south of town about one-and-a-half miles west of where Main Street meets Interstate 65. Reid's three sons – John (1829-1909), Reuben (1830-1915) and James Hinton (1832-1900) – farmed the land around Mayfield until 1855 when they sold it to Daniel Ladd for $1,000 henceforth known as "Ladd's Landing." The landing served as an important stop along the then lengthy Henderson River for rafting, hunting and trading before becoming an important center for lumber production starting about 1850 with earlylogging operations conducted by David Ladd Sr., Daniel's brother. During prohibition in 1920 local residents helped supply Paducah with beer while violating Prohibition laws; this resulted in several law enforcement arrests including one made by Porter Noyes later that year which led to his firing from his job as sheriff of Clay County In 1925 a post office called "Hendersonville" was established two miles east of present day Mayfield at what is now US 11th Street/Route 127 intersection. That town ceased operations sometime after 1957 when its ZIP code changed from 73110 to 22422 due to population growth within that area over that time period A new post office called "Mayfield" opened on October 15, 1927, six days after Hendersonville closed its doors following prohibition enforcement actions there involving local residents The first store located in Mayfield was The credit union building which opened in 1929 across Old Highway 231 south of town opposite Fourth Street During World War II many people came through Mayfield looking for work during the construction boom associated with military construction projects such as bridges and dams throughout Clay County The larger businesses started arriving during this time including electricians shop Fidelity Hardware & Electrical chain store First National Bank branch operated by JF McClendon until it closed around 1970 followed by other smaller shops like Wacoal tire store followed soon thereafter By 1980 all but one business had closed or been converted into apartments or condos leaving just Thecreditunion remaining open until 2001 . In 2002 fire destroyed most of downtown memoryland causing most businesses stopped operation within 2 years market conditions had changed significantly since then resulting in redevelopment taking place . By 1910, most of the buildings were gone and all that remained were some scattered trees and an old schoolhouse which still stands today.
