Mayfield is a small town in Webster County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Webster County by population. The name of Mayfield likely comes from an early settler named John Mayfield who came to the area in 1812. The first post office was established in 1819 and was called "Galloway." In 1837, the name of the post office was changed to "Mayfield." The town began as a small village on a rise above the Cumberland River and soon became one of the most important rural communities in southern Webster County. A few miles east of town, on Route 3 near present-day Bellefontaine Cemetery, farmers developed what would become known as the Mayfields' cotton fields stretching for several miles northward. Today's buildings date back to around 1830-1840 - many were built by local merchants who saw an opportunity to expand their businesses along with new roads and transportation options that had arrived since President James K. Polk's administration took office in 1845. By 1860, when Union forces invaded northern Kentucky during the American Civil War, there were only about seventy residents living in Mayfield - most of them African Americans working as sharecroppers on white soil. By 1865 over two thousand people lived within just six blocks of downtown; by 1870 it had increased to more than five hundred residents thanks to new construction and agricultural improvements brought about by railroads and other development opportunities available west of Louisville (then part of Jefferson County). During Reconstruction period (1865-1877) much progress was made both physically and economically for African Americans living within traditional white society but not always without conflict or struggle - some members of Congress attempted unsuccessfully (in 1865) to pass a bill legalizing slavery while others successfully opposed such legislation despite public outcry throughout southeastern Kentucky during this time period. However overall conditions for black people improved significantly after Reconstruction through education/employment opportunities opened up due to technological advances (elements like automobiles), legal changes resulting from Supreme Court decisions regarding voting rights (# Brown v Board OF Education (1955)), general social unrest which died down following World War I (a result of America's entry into World War I), coupled with concerted efforts by various government entities including state governments and local organizations such as Tuskegee Institute; all facetscollaboratively contributing towards creating an inclusive society for all citizens regardless race or ethnicity during this era

Mayfield is a small town located in eastern Kentucky, United States. It was founded on May 1, 1810 by three men who were pioneers in the area. The town has since grown and became an important community in eastern Kentucky. The first settlers to Mayfield were David Mayfield, John Overbey and George Wilkinson. They all came from the town of Maysville, England. In 1810, these men set out from Maysville to start a new life in what is now eastern Kentucky. They arrived at the present day site of Mayfield and began building a cabin. Their settlement soon grew into a small village with about 25 people. David Mayfield was the first mayor of Mayfield Village. He served for one year from 1811-12. George Wilkinson also served as mayor for one year from 1811-12 until he died in office on November 10, 1812. John Overbey was the second Mayor of Mayfield Village from 1813-15 before he also passed away in office on October 15, 1815. John Wilkinson's brother David may have been the first person to die in action during American Revolutionary War when he was killed while fighting against British forces at Fort Donelson on July 9, 1795
Mayfield was founded in 1792 by James Mayfield and his wife Sally. The area that is now Mayfield was part of the Kingdom of Transylvania until it was ceded to Kentucky by the United States in 1801. In 1802, Mayfield married a woman from nearby Perry County, KY. The town became known as "Mayfields" after their marriage. In 1806, the town had a population of just over 100 people and began to grow rapidly due to its natural resources and trade with other surrounding towns. By 1830, Mayfields had a population of 2,000 people and was one of the largest settlements in Kentucky. In 1847, Mayfields incorporated as a city and quickly became an important transportation hub for the region. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Mayfield served as a military post for Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. For many years afterwards, it remained one ofKentucky's most valuable industrial centers thanks to its production of cotton textiles and shoes, among other products. However, during the 1960s and 1970s,Mayfields slowly lost its economic status as manufacturing declined in other parts of Kentucky while new businesses grew up around it such as health care and grocery stores. Today mayfield remains an important center for agriculture with a significant concentration of farming operations around its downtown square
