Madisonville is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The Madisonville post office has been in operation since 1872. The community of Madisonville was founded by General John Lloyd Magruder on November 3, 1836. He named it after his old home in Virginia City, Nevada. There were only 10 people living in Madisonville when it was platted as a village on December 17, 1837. It grew rapidly due to the discovery of coal mines here and timber sales from the surrounding forest. In 1865-1866, many miners who had worked at the nearby Butte mine came toMadisonville to start their own families because they could no longer support themselves with just wages from the mines. This influx of new people helped to revive the economy and make Madisonville one of the most prosperous towns in Johnson County during that time period. The first school in Madisonville was built in 1838 and taught children between ages 6 and 12 years old. A second school was built soon after which served students up through high school until 1907 when an addition became necessary for capacity reasons; this added floor space made it possible for students from all over Johnson County to attend together without having different courses open each day for each grade level classifications (elementary/junior high/senior high). In 1916 a third school building replaced the original two-story structure which had become too small for growing student populations and inadequate for accommodating future growth rates; this additional classroom wing also housed an auditorium which served as a movie theater until 1978 when it burned down while being used as a storage shed following an accidental fire that destroyed most of its contents including several movies dating back to 1922-1924!
