Madisonville is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The community was named after James Madison, 26th President of the United States. The first settler in what is now Madisonville was John Patterson who came from Massachusetts in 1795 and built a cabin on a hill about two miles east of present day Madisonville. He also founded Patterson's Station on the Ohio River near present day Louisville. In 1810, General William Harnett moved his army to what is now Johnson County when he defeated Major Anthony Wayne during the Battle of Fallen Timbers outside Richmond, Virginia. After this victory, Harnett made it his home and started to build up what would become Madisonville as his new basecamp for operations against Indian attacks on horseback over the next few years. In 1812 Governor Claiborne Jackson appointed Jotham Covington as its first postmaster and ordered him to take care of things hereabouts as he had no office within Johnson County. Covington did an excellent job in getting mail sent here often faster than any other place in Kentucky at that time and he soon became known as "the best postmaster in America." In 1815 general Andrew Jackson called a meeting of all the major landowners in Johnson County and proposed creating an area around Clarksburg which would be known as "Jackson Valley" because it would lie within Jackson's domain at that time visitors could only go through Clarksburg then come back down into Johnson County where they were required by law to report every mile they rode or walked on their way from one end ofJohnsonCountyto another
