Madisonville is a small town in eastern Kentucky, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Campbell County. The first settler in Madisonville was Levi Coffin, who came to this area in 1815 from Virginia. He built a log cabin on the banks of the River Cumberland and named it Madisonville after his father, James Madison, 2nd U.S. president (1792-1849). Other early residents included Dr. John Salyer (1798-1876), General Israel Putnam (1799-1868), and Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest (1801-1865). The first store in Madisonville was opened by Dr. Salyer in 1827 and operated until 1857. In 1846, Charles Goodnight built a grist mill there which he operated until 1861; it then became known as the "Goodnight Mill". In 1865, General Forrest burned most of the village to prevent capture by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The mill was rebuilt and continued operation until 1965 when it was finally destroyed by fire. During World War II, many workers from nearby Bardstown worked at two large munitions plants near Lexington – one for Henry Halleck and Company and one for Moxie/Gulfstream Corporation – which were located just outside of town on what is now Interstate 65 between Louisville and Nashville . The post offices that served Madisonville during its early years were called "Newcastle" (established 1800), "Munday" (established 1795), "Cordova" (established 1800), "Kingston" (established 1800), "Boydtown" (establishing 1830s) etc., but all eventually became closed or changed their name to something more contemporary such as "Madisonville." In 1906, JF Walther started an ice cream company here which still exists today under the name Walther's Dairy Creamery Incorporated.. In 1925 local doctor Samuel Weinstock established a hospital here which still operates today as Paducah University Hospital Medical Center - one of only a few hospitals in Kentucky with this distinction! There have been numerous high profile events associated withMadisonville over the years including: being chosen site for the new central government building in 1961; hosting both Republican National Convention's(1952 & 1964) held there; being host to Expo '67 - international exposition sponsored by America; hosting world championships wrestlers 2001 & 2003; becoming home to world headquarters for electronic voting technology 2006 .....and much more!
