Many prominent people from throughout Kentucky made their homes here including Judge John Brawley (1861-1937), Dr. Jotham Goodloe (1847-1925), General William Taney (1856-1942), Mrs. Anna Stephenson (1851-1946),Senator James Guthrie (1864-1950) and Governor Robert Eustis (1900-1963). The town also enjoyed considerable prosperity during World War II when it became an important supply center for troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended,Madisonville quickly reverted back to its former prosperity as various new businesses were established along Second Avenue including a large grocery store called Marion Brothers that operated until 1974; two insurance companies; three banks; two health clinics; several restaurants; and five schools: four public schools and one private school-. In recent years, much progress has been made toward revitalizing Madisonville with efforts being put forth by Mayor Kieth Nealy and his team culminating with plans for an open air market located near Second Avenue where residents can purchase their favorite local products direct from local growers..
