Madisonville is a small town located in Whitley County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Whitley County. Madisonville was laid out by James Madison in 1801 and named for him. The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1810. By 1830, the town had a school and two stores. In 1832, John Crouch built a sawmill on the White River and started to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. A post office was established in 1835 and soon became known as "the Logging Capital of America." By 1840, Madisonville had a store, three hotels, nine schools, four churches and seventy-six families residing there. In 1851-52 James Hogg founded the first bank in Kentucky with $5 000 from his father-in-law Hugh Blair. In 1860, another post office was established at Madisonville with Jno Prentice as its first occupant. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many businesses closed due to war shortages but most returned after 1865 when hostilities ended. After the war many residents moved away because of new technologies such as railroads which made goods more accessible across country In 1889 an agricultural extension station was built near present day Carbondale to provide food for workers living in neighboring towns during extended periods without markets or other sources of sustenance
