Madisonville is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,583 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1852 by George Washington Coffee. In 1865, Johnnie Caldwell opened his own roasting business. The first espresso machines were created here in 1912 by Angelo Bonomi and Ettore Bugnini. Madisonville became a center for coffee production after World War II when manufacturing jobs shifted to nearby Louisville and other eastern Kentucky counties. In the early 1990s, area farmers started growing Arabica beans for Dutch-based Koffieclub Nederland (KNC) which began importing large quantities of Colombian coffee from producers in Columbia and Ecuador into the United States. KNC's ownership of the beans caused some decline in demand for local roasted coffee; however, this changed with KNC's acquisition of Peet's Coffee in 2006 and its move from Netherlands to Memphis, Tennessee as their new headquarters. As a result of these changes, much of what had been produced at Madisonville Roastery & Coffee Estate—the largest producer of certified organic whole bean Colombian coffee in the world—finally disappeared as Peet's moved production offshore to increase efficiency and avoid inadvertently damaging or harming their environmental commitments. However, due to continued growth within both KNC and peetcoffeeusa LLC (a wholly owned subsidiary), many sustainable practices have been put into place such as using mostly propane-fired roasters rather than electric ones; using ungulateskinned coffeespeeds instead of those made from cows' skin; fermenting several weeks longer than usual before packaging so that fresh flavors are retained longer; using only 100% pure Arabica beans instead of blends; keeping inventory low so that not all products are affected by price increases announced by major retailers such as Walmart since they purchase larger quantities from Peruvian importers.;[1] investments totaling $5 million have been made over the last five years alone to improve quality assurance processes including renovation/updating facilities adjacent to their main warehouse located on Pinson Ridge Road outside Lexington;[2] installation of advanced equipment including an ultra-sensitive bar code reader that enables them to track every bean minute-by-minute during processing thereby reducing waste rates related to spoilage caused by contact with milk proteins.[3] These initiatives have helped revive interest within local businesses towards producing Certified Organic coffee rather than purchasing it secondhand.,[4][5][6][7] resulting in increased sales averaging $600 per ton Bring Your Own Bean bagel sold at participating retail locations since 2008..

However, despite these setbacks, Madisonville continued to grow during Reconstruction until it reached its peak with 3,000 residents in 1920; however this growth stopped abruptly after World War I because of shortages in goods brought overland by railroads and truckloads of wartime refugees who had no other way to support themselves than through agriculture or service work..
