In the early 1800s, a small farmer in Madisonville, Kentucky, named John Todd started making coffee. His beans were roasted on his family's farm and he sold them direct to consumers. In the 1840s, another small farmer in Madisonville started selling coffee from a shop on Main Street. The business was successful and by 1850, the town had a few cafes and grocery stores. By 1875, Madisonville had become an important center for coffee production because of its location at the head of navigation on the Cumberland River. In that year, Nicholas-Jacques Conte & Sons began brewing coffee in large quantities for retail use in Louisville and other cities across America. By 1900, almost all of America's major metropolitan areas had their own local sources of artisan coffee. The industry grew increasingly mechanized as espresso machines became more common throughout Europe in the 1920s. Coffee factories began opening up all over America; some operated until they were destroyed by fire or bombed during World War II; others continued to operate until they closed down entirely during the late 1960s and 1970s.
Madisonville, Kentucky is a small town located in Fayette County, Kentucky. The population was 3,895 at the 2000 census. The Madisonville post office was established in 1827 and discontinued in 1902. It was reestablished in 1906 and continues to serve as the town's main mailing address. The first settler in Madisonville was Levi Hinton, who arrived on horseback from Tennessee in 1811. He built a cabin on the banks of the River Thames and named it Hinton's Ferry. In 1821, Isaac Trimble and his family moved to Madisonville from Bristol, Tennessee and began to grow corn and other crops. They also raised hogs and cattle. By 1830, they had erected a frame house which served as their home until their death in 1865. In 1843-44, Johnnie Caldwell purchased land near present day downtown Madisonville from James Carrick for $720 cash; this included part of what is now East Market Street. He began to build a log cabin which he called Caldwell's Cabin (now known as Baldwin Hall). It remained original until about 1880 when it was replaced by a stone structure which still stands today (east side of Main Street). In 1870-71 Jeptha Witherspoon homesteaded property just east of where Caldwell's Cabin now stands; this property includes most of what is now North Market Street between First and Second Streets. Witherspoon also founded West Point Academy which became one of the largest educational institutions west of the Mississippi River during its time (1898-1924). In 1896-97 George Coster bought 640 acres adjoining Witherspoon's land including all of what is now North Market Street between First and Second Streets; this land later became part of University Parkland public housing development that presently occupies most of that stretch of streetscape southward from Third Avenue across State Road 655E toward Interstate 65/Kentucky Route 422A (formerly US 421A)

Madisonville was a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town. Madisonville was founded in 1803 by John Caldwell and James Caldwell. The name comes from the creek that ran through the town. In 1830, James Caldwell married Martha Ballard of Louisville and moved to Madisonville with her. The couple had two children: Daniel and Martha Caldwell Ballard. The first store in Madisonville opened in 1833. By 1840, the population had reached 2,100 people. The community began to decline after racial tensions increased between white Americans and African Americans during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down part of Madisonville while occupying it as his headquarters during the Battle of Nashville (December 15-17, 1861). In 1868, John Witherspoon bought land near present day Bellevue for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). He built a large plantation there called "Witherspoon's Hill". Witherspoon became an important figure in politics and business in Clay County during Reconstruction (1868-1912). Afterward he sold most of his holdings to other investors and died in office without leaving any descendants behind him. In 1912, Clay County voted not to secede from the United States because they felt that doing so would have been unconstitutional under their Constitution. However, many residents left for better opportunities outside of Kentucky during World War I (1914-1918) due to lack of food or jobs available back home after war broke out across America. Many homes were destroyed by fire as result of wartime bombings raids on Lexington/Fayette County which happened frequently throughout World War I; these burns are still visible today around parts of downtown Lexington being rebuilt following the war era bombings damage

The village was founded in 1819 by John C. Campbell and named for General James K. Madison, who served as commander of the Union army during the American Civil War.
