The United States Air Force has been providing air support for the American people since World War II. The USAF today operates more than 151,000 aircraft and employs over 188,000 employees. The USAF is one of the most diverse air forces in the world and its mission ranges from supporting our homeland security to conducting global operations. One of the first organizations that the USAF founded was a bomber squadron called "1st Bomb Wing" in Madisonville, Kentucky on December 8, 1945. The 1st BW operated B-29s until it was disbanded on October 15, 1946. The 2nd Bomb Wing was established at RAF Fairford in England on February 9, 1947 as part of Operation Overlord which led to Allied victory in Europe. After Overlord ended, Beale AFB became home to the First Bombardment Wing ( Fighter) on April 12th, 1948 while RAF Coningsby became home to Second Bombardment Wing ( Bomber) on July 1st of that year. With Headquarters located at two different locations during these years – one for fighter units and one for bombers – there were multiple squadrons operating under one command structure throughout World War II and into Korea war. In 1962 when missiles began becoming a mainstay of USAF strategic bombing doctrine, HQ Tactical Air Command activated two new wings: XXIX Tactical Air Command (Air Defense), based at Fort Worth TX; and XXXIII Tactical Air Command (Air Combat), headquartered at Little Rock AR via an allotment from Twentieth AF activated duringactivation of Ninth AF effective September 30th 1950 with *2 squadrons* concurrently assigned thereto being redesignated aswing commands upon activation with no change in flying status or mission equipage notwithstanding! These changes did not reflect actual operational capabilities although both commands were designated "Air Forces",entity that persisted untilactivated again effective May 16th 1971 as part of Continental US Army/Ninth AF's Redeployments program following termination of SAC's military presence worldwide!
