He married Lady Bird Johnson on May 20, 1935 and became a U.S. Senator from Texas when she was elected to that office in 1966. Johnson then ran for president in 1968 and won with wide support from both Democratic Party primary voters and many Republicans who saw him as a potential leader given his experience as a prosecutor and Congressman from Houston, Texas. In 1976 Johnson ran for president again but lost to Jimmy Carter by just 2 percentage points despite being able to criticize Carter’s policies more effectively than any other candidate did during that campaign season.
