Lyndon, Kentucky is home to one of the most unique coffee experiences in the country. The town's namesake was James K. Polk, who served as U.S. President from 1849-1853 and is generally considered to be the founder of modern American coffee culture. In 1896, John Fenton opened his first coffee shop in what is now the base of Lyndon Station on US 25. Today, Fenton's Coffee & Tea Company remains a popular stop for locals and tourists alike, serving delicious cups of Java, espresso, and more than 20 other Ethiopia-based beans from around the world. In 1903, three men from Illinois bought a small farm in rural Johnson County and started farming coffee beans on it. By 1916, they had developed a large plantation with about 120 acres that produced over 2 million pounds of coffee per year. The men were named George Foreman and Hiram Johnson Sr., both natives of Kansas City, Missouri; John Jablonski (Johnnie) Foreman (Hiram's brother); and Arno Sauer (Avery). They became known as "The Masters" because their plantation operated at an altitude above sea level where temperature control was essential for quality beans. In 1949, when James K Polk was assassinated in Dallas by radical right wing separatists motivated by racism towards African Americans living within segregated America, LBJ succeeded him as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President after being elected 44th president on November 8th of that year - making him the first African American to serve in that position since Reconstruction years earlier. As Vice President he appointed two black justices on the United States Supreme Court: Thurgood Marshall and Robert Hargrave Marshall Jr.. With JFK's inauguration as Ulysses S Grant's successor on February 12th 1961 – following only four months into his presidency – LBJ became acting president until RFK could be inaugurated on January 20th 1962 due to JFK's assassination just days before his inauguration date!
