The Navy has a history in Louisville, Kentucky that dates back to the end of the American Revolution. In 1794, Commodore James K. Polk organized a small navy based in Louisville and called it The Squadron of the Blue Grass. This navy was composed of four warships- the Constitution, the President, USS Constitution Museum and USS George Washington- all moored at old Fort Necessity on the Cumberland River. The fleet frequently patrolled against piracy and other threats to maritime safety. In 1827, Admiral John Swayne erected a small fort on what is now Old Fort Donelson on the river bank south of downtown Louisville to serve as a naval base for Great Lakes operations. USS Donelson served as flagship of Commander Ulysses S. Grant's Black Hawk expedition against Creek Indians in 1838-39 and again in 1861 during the Civil War. The Navy fell out of favor with General Thomas Jowell after he took office as commander in chief in 1865. However, General Jowell restored naval activity by constructing two new ships - CSS Stonington (1868) and CSS Defiance (1875). These warships were part of an effort by General Jowell to revive America's navies following its defeats at Gettysburg and Manila Bay during World War I After World War II ended, plans were made to build a new navy station along Lake Erie but these plans never came to fruition due to funding issues within Congress. There were also discussions about building another naval facility adjacent to downtown Louisville but these proposals too disappeared into history until 1997 when then Mayor Steve Beshear announced that he had purchased land for $3 million near Terminal 5 at US Airways Center which would become home to both The Naval Air Station Lexington (NASL) and NASL Reserve Fleet Headquarters Since its inception NASL has played an important role in providing training for sailors from all over America including members of The United States Marine Corps Forces Europe who are deployed around the world NASL is also home to one of only two squadronrons permanently assigned worldwide - Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW9) which provides air support for amphibious landing operations ashore As part as its primary mission NASL participates fully in many community outreach events such as providing free food baskets distributed through local Hunger Games charities every February .
