The Kentucky National Guard was established on February 15, 1792 as the Militia of Kentucky. The first regiment was organized in Lexington and called the "Kentucky Volunteers." On July 6, 1825, commissioners went out into central Kentucky and laid out blocks on which were erected buildings that would serve as courthouserooms; Adam–Smith Academy; First Bank building; Masonic Temple (now called Crowne Plaza); Presbyterian Church (now Christ Episcopal Cathedral); Second Bank building; Commonwealth Club Building; First National Bank building; National Hotel/Casino complex including Aladdin's Castle (now demolished).
