Louisville, Kentucky is a city in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The population was 26,643 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and home to several universities including the University of Louisville and The University of Memphis. Louisville was founded on December 6, 1792 by General James Wilkinson as the capital of Jefferonton Parish. The first European to visit what is now Louisville was Anthony de Lacrosse in 1795 while exploring western Kentucky for his French colonization company. De Lacrosse noted that "a great many fine villages" lay before him but he decided against founding a town in this area because it was too difficult to transport goods overland from settlements farther west. He instead chose to build an intrastate trading post near present-day downtown Louisville. In 1800, Colonel William Blount built another trading post along the Ohio River just south of present-day downtown Louisville. This post became known as Fort Knox because it served as a military headquarters for both France and England during their conflicts with each other over control of Louisiana (then Presidio) and West Tennessee (then territory jointly controlled by both France and Britain). In 1802, when France ceded Louisiana back to Spain after its victory in the Mexican–American War, Blount's post became Spanish Fort at what is now East End Street/Newburgh Street in downtown Louisville. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate forces burned down part of Union fortifications nearpresent-day Downtown Louisville on November 11th 1861 under orders from General Robert Ewell; this event is also known as KY Derby day or Bloody Sunday due to fatalities resulting from the firestorm which followed。 On April 12th 1865, following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House northeast of downtown Louisville, all remaining Confederate forces were destroyed within hours by Union troops led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant who established Northern District Command headquartered at Soldiers' Barracks east of Market Square where today's federal courthouse stands
