The Lexington National Guard was organized on December 15, 1861, in response to the Confederate Robert E. Lee's request for a national guard. The first commander of the Lexington National Guard was Colonel John S. Overbeck. The unit consisted of 10 officers and men and had no military value other than its role in providing security at local events such as parades and funerals. On October 9, 1862, the Lexington National Guard participated in the Battle of Cross Keys which resulted in Confederate losses that year. In 1865, when Kentucky seceded from the United States and joined the Confederacy, the Lexington National Guard remained active until 1868 when it disbanded due to low morale among its members. After this time, there was no regular or permanent national guard presence in Lexington; only occasional detachments did duty here for brief periods of time before disbanding again. Despite these short-term assignments, many memories remain about those who served with the Lexington National Guard during some of history's most pivotal moments - including Bowie's Raid which occurred on April 14th, 1865; Supervising over ceremonies marking Union victory at Perryville on November 12th; guarding against a possible slave insurrection on December 6th;and participating in several battles throughout Kentucky during Reconstruction period.

This change was due to two factors: 1) because of growing international tensions; and 2) because of increasing calls for military service by civilians. Today, there are over 50 different National Guard divisions located throughout America. They play an important role in law enforcement, public safety, and disaster relief. In addition to their active duty roles, these divisions often provide support to state militias during times of emergency or crisis. The guard is one of few paramilitary organizations that has continued to grow in popularity after 9/11/2001 – many people believe that its active duty capabilities could have been used more effectively if they had been available at that time!

In 1792, the first Kentucky Cavalry Regiment was organized. The regiment served in the Revolutionary War under the command of Captain Samuel Adams. In 1799, Colonel James Finley organized a second Kentucky Cavalry Regiment and it served in the War of 1812 under Colonel John Brown. The third Kentucky Cavalry Regiment was raised in 1824 and served in the Mexican-American War as part of General Winfield Scott's army. The fourth Kentucky Cavalry Regiment was raised in 1850 and fought in the American Civil War as part of General Robert E. Lee's army. After the war, many members of these regiments migrated to Kansas Territory where they founded various communities including Lexington, now known as one of America's most diverse cities.
