The history of marine gifts in Lexington, Kentucky goes back over 350 years. Marine gifts have been a popular tradition in the town since before there were any seaside communities in the area. In 1807, Nicholas Biddle donated land to Lexington for use as a Naval Station. The station was renamed Naval Air Station Lexington in 1942 and has been home to the US Navy since 1946. The present day Marine Gift shop on Main Street is one of the oldest businesses in Lexington and has been selling marine gifts since 1924. The first sea-based gift store was opened by Mrs. Lillie Capps of Portsmouth, NH shortly after World War I. She had seen an advertisement for a store dealing in naval supplies near Boston and decided to open her own business. Mrs. Capps' store sold items such as anchors, moorings, fishing gear,Signals/Telephone Systems and more from inland United States ports around New England until the early 1920s when she closed her doors forever due to lack of customers or competition from other stores that had opened up during that time period. In 1922, Cappy's son Julius founded J & J Gourmet Fish Market which quickly became one of the most successful seafood retailers in Lexington at that time (- even surviving into the 1990s). Julius passed away in 1984 but his sons continued running their store until it closed its doors finally on October 1st 1998; just shy of 75 years! In 1945, famed oceanographer Dr Robert Peary came to Lexington with his ship "Halifax" on a scientific expedition exploring Arctic ice fields for oil reserves. He invited many local residents (including Mayor Wilkinson) down onto his vessel for dinner at his hotel where he presented them with several items including an Anchor chain and Maryland Flag Tote Bag! It was also during this visit that Dr Peary donated two large crates of confiscated Japanese goods from World War II (the same haul he would later give to University of Texas at Austin!). A few weeks later (November 6th), Mr Johnnie Wills founded Wills Brothers Store which quickly became one of the largest traders/gift shops ever established within downtown Lexington! His store specialized exclusively inmarine gifts both personal AND institutionalized!! Today we still carry nearly everything Johnnie Wills ever sold!!! In fact we are even open late into the night Tuesday thru Saturday!!! In 1814, when Kentucky was created from part of Virginia, Lexington became the new capital. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century because of heavy demand for labor in railroad construction and other urban projects; however, by 1920 it had lost nearly all its economic significance due to suburbanization and loss of jobs in manufacturing. Despite this decline, however, Lexington has continued to be a popular tourist spot with plenty of attractions for those who want to experience old-fashioned American town life.
