The name "Lexington" comes from an Englishman named John Lexington who came to this area in 1785 and platted what is now the city Limits on December 17, 1814. This would be the first time that a U.S. city had been named after an Englishman. In 1819, when James Ketchum founded present-day Louisville, Kentucky, he moved his operations to what is now Lexington because it offered more opportunities for trade with France than did Louisville at that time. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down buildings in Lexington during the American Civil War for refusing to surrender their weapons to Union forces. This event helped initiate the nickname "the destroyed city." A new downtown was built following war's end and retains many of these early features including brick walls around streets and public squares dating back to nineteenth century construction techniques which were not possible with older materials such asadobe or adobe walls After World War II, Lexington experienced rapid growth due principally to its status as a research center for Monsanto (now Bayer) and other large chemical companies located thereabouts. It is hard to overestimate the impact that Lexington, Kentucky had on American history. From being the largest and most influential city in Kentucky to being a center of the slave trade, Lexington played an outsized role in both America's development and its social hierarchy. The city was founded by James Robertson in 1785 as a trading post on the western edge of what is now Kentucky. By 1800, it had become one of the most important port cities in America due to its location at the mouth of the River Danube, which made it easy for traders to connect with India and other parts of Europe. The city also became a center for education and business because it was located close to two major rivers and two major markets. In 1801, when President John Adams appointed Robert E. Lee as commander-in-chief of all Federal forces in Kentucky, Lexington became his headquarters. Under Lee's leadership, Lexington grew into one of America's most powerful cities during the antebellum period. The city prospered not only due to its strategic location but also thanks to its large population and booming economy. In addition, many talented politicians and businessmen from Lexington established themselves across New England during this time period (e.g., Amos Kendall). However, during the Civil War (1861-1865), things changed dramatically for Lexington. After Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters eastward towards Louisville instead of westward towards Richmond like he had planned earlier that year. This change caused significant infrastructure damage within town limits as well as among individual buildings such as businesses and homes - essentially destroying much of what had once been there! However, despite these setbacks, locals managed to rebuild quickly enough so that by 1870 – three years after Robert Ewell's surrender – Lexington again boasted some of America's biggest hospitals (including Union Memorial Hospital) and some OfNRall architecture including several fine churches (St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church & Christmastime Eve Chapel).
The first people to live in Lexington were the Algonquian-speaking Piscataway tribe. The area was part of what is now Kentucky for about 900 years. In 1795, the French founded a trading post called Fort Pitt on the riverfront and named it after their king, Francis Westphal. The fort was destroyed by British forces in 1800, but a new one was built at the same location in 1802. In 1803, Kentucky became a territory of United States. In 1825, Kentucky became an independent country when it seceded from the US. During its time as an Independent country, Lexington played an important role in its history. It was home to the legislatures of both Kentucky and United States and also served as a center for education and industry.
