Lawrenceburg is a small town in Kentucky that is located on the Cumberland River. The population was 5,752 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Lawrenceburg-Fayetteville, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Lawrenceburg was made by pioneers in 1800. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson and his army camped near present-day Lawrenceburg while invading Tennessee. When they moved away, many of the pioneer families returned to their homes and began to build homes there. The first post office was established in 1808, and it remained in operation until 1865. In 1814, Colonel John Silliman purchased land east of present-day Lawrenceburg from Daniel Boone for $5 per acre. He built a log cabin which he named "Silliman's Fort". After several years, Colonel Silliman decided to move hisFort to its current location because he found it difficult to get goods and people through the Cumberland River during wintertime. He started building a more permanent structure which he called "Hurtig's House" (now known as "Porter House"). In 1830, Kentucky Senator John Pemberton organized a survey party that traveled through central Kentucky looking for new sites for settlements. They discovered land east of present-day Lawrenceburg and offered it to Colonel Silliman for purchase. colonel accepted and set about erecting buildings on the land including Hurtig’s House which still stands today.. Later that year, Colonel Silliman married Rebecca Ann Hensley from Randolph County (now Hardin County). They had two children; Samuel Latham Silliman who also became a senator and Josephinesevere Silliman who also became an actress/booker/politician in her own right.- President James Ketchum Fenton appointed her Missouri Valley Territory Agent at Large when Territorial Governor Isaac Shelby resigned office on October 17th 1861.- She continued working until 1865 when she retired from public life.– Married into another prominent family members later– Became Mrs Rev654 Ethel Mears., daughter of Reuben Capps Capps IV
