During the Revolutionary War, Jeffersontown was a key center of service for the military. The town was home to General George Rogers Clark's command post during his march from Lexington to Concord in 1775. The town also played an important role in the Battle of Blackwater Creek on July 26, 1864, when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Ulysses S. Grant's army at Jeffersontown Cemetery. In 1861,Jeffersontown became the site of the first Civil War military deployment when Kentucky Volunteers were called into service to protect Louisville and other cities from a possible Union attack. A year later, in 1863, Confederate troops again arrived in Jeffersontown to take part in the Battle of Perryville. In 1865, Confederate soldiers evacuated Jeffersonton after learning that Union forces had moved northward toward Richmond. Recommissioned as a Cavalry Regiment on November 2nd 1865 by Brevet Major General Isaac Pemberton Peale commanding I Corps cavalry division (Far East District), this regiment fought with distinction throughout the American Civil War until its disbandment following peace negotiations in 1865 which saw Kentucky join the Confederacy once again. On September 10th 1868 these same men who had fought so gallantly at Perryville and Blackwater Creek re-enactned one of history’s most famous engagements at Green River where they faced off against five thousand Federal Militia – losing only one man killed and seven officers wounded including Colonel Samuel Hood – before finally withdrawing without achieving their objective which was to menacingly circumscribe Grant’s supply line entering Tennessee through Cumberland Gap National Park

In 1824, a post office was established inJeffersontown, and by 1830 it had become a town with a population of 1,500 people. The first school in Jeffersontown was built on Main Street in 1832. In 1871, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 5,000 people. On November 3rd of that year, local residents voted to change their name to Louisville County after then-President Ulysses S. Grant's visit to the city two weeks earlier. On December 6th of that year, Louisville County became full member of the Union States during the American Civil War because most other Kentucky counties remained Confederate until 1865 when they seceded from the United States.
