Jeffersontown is a small town located in Scott County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Jeffersontown is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent habitation in what is now Jeffersontown was founded by settlers from Dennison, Michigan, in 1822. The town was named after Captain John Jefferys and his family who had come overland from Maryland that year. A post office was established at Jeffersontown in 1830, and for many years it functioned as the only trading post on the then-new River Road between Louisville and Lexington. In 1868-69 a Mr. Fenton built a sawmill on the confluence of the Little River and the Antrim Rivers withinJeffersontown limits; this mill became one of the most important enterprises of its type in Jefferson County and soon supplied mills throughout southern Kentucky with lumber needed for building purposes. In 1880-81 Major John Schieffer built a gristmill on Antrim Creek withinJefferson County limits; this mill continued to be operated until it shut down in 1984. In 1894-95 two schools were built adjacent to each other (on land donated by Mrs. Anna Hahn) in what is now known as Oldtown Jeffersontown; these schools are still used today as community centers. One year later (1896), an electric Railway Station was built just east of downtown Jeffersontown on Antrim Creek; this station served as a transportation hub for goods coming into and going out of Jefferson County until it closed down in 1972(). It wasn't until 1907 that construction began on what would become campus headquarters for Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale). This new campus included classrooms, buildings for dining facilities, recreational fields, an athletic field house/gymnasium, science laboratories and more.— There has never been anything quite like SIU Carbondale! The distinctive red brick architecture which can be seen all around town today owes much to generous donations from alumni., including $15 million given by SIU President James Manges during his time as Chancellor
