The first coffee bean roasters in Jeffersontown were John Dickey, Sr., who ran the Dickey Roastery; his son John Dickey, Jr., who founded JDB Coffee Company; and their grandson, John Dickey III, who continues to run the business today. Today, there are several hundred coffee businesses operating throughout Kentucky and many more adjoining states. The origins of espresso go back even further than this - to Rome, Italy - where coffee was introduced into Europe by Arab traders during the 16th century. In England in 1590, an Italian named Giovanni Battista Cappuccio developed what would become known as espresso-style coffee while working for Portuguese traders living in London. Jeffersontown is a small town in the state of Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It is located in Muhlenberg County. Jeffersontown is one of two towns in Muhlenberg County and it lies within the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jeffersontown was founded by John Jefferys on December 12, 1806 as a log cabin community near what are now Georgetown and Manchestertown Roads in present day Jefferson Township. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location, easy access to water supplies, and fertile land. By 1828, there were over 150 people living in Jeffersontown. By 1830, the community had become known as "the prettiest place on Earth". The first store opened in 1827 and soon became an important part of the town's economy. In 1830, a post office was established and quickly became popular because it offered convenient postal service for residents of Jeffersontown and nearby communities such as Manchestertown. The post office closed around 1870 but has been preserved as part of exhibits at the McConnellsburg Museum since 1957. In 1840, local resident James Auld donated land to build a school which served both JeffersontOWN residents and students from nearby villages such asManchestertown and Georgetown (then called Wilmot). Classes started on October 15th that year with just 10 students enrolled from 6 different villages! Today more than 100 years later Jeffersontown's namesake high school offers undergraduate degrees through its dual enrollment program with DePauw University; graduate programs through Cumberland University; along with numerous business courses leading up to entrepreneurism certification through Entrepreneurial Institute International (EII). One of America's earliest electrician shops opened its doors in 1861 when Julius Cogenberger erected his shop on State Street between Main Street and Park Avenue overlooking downtownJeffersonville (now Flemingdonia). This pioneering business marked the beginning of electric lighting throughout much of Kentucky during this time period! Electricians commenced working here starting out as simple household items like switchboards until they eventually progressed into providing services such as wiring homes for new additions or upgrading old ones! It lies on the Louisville- Lexington metropolitan area and is part of the Louisville/Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jeffersontown was founded in 1827 as a log cabin settlement by John Jefferys and his family. The first post office was established in 1828. In 1830, the town became an agricultural center with the opening of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Jeffersonton's growth was halted by World War II and its effects are still felt today: many military personnel returned to their home towns after service in Europe during that war; few businesses have been opened since then; and most of the homes were destroyed or abandoned during the postwar period. The community's success story began again following World War III when several businesspeople decided to revive it: they constructed a new high school and shopping mall; developed an amusement park adjacent to the mill; and started development of a new downtown district that has since become one of Jeffersontown's main attractions. Today, Jeffersontown remains an active commercial center with numerous stores, restaurants, bars, and hotels clustered around its busy central square.
