This victory ended Spanish sovereignty over eastern Kentucky and helped pave the way for American annexation that year. Arizona followed suit two years later; when Mexican independence was recognized by both countries in 1821, eastern Kentucky became part of America again. Political instability continued through most of Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era reforms aimed at ending racial violence across America following the Civil War (1861-1865). This period also saw major changes at the federal level with Manifest Destiny seeking Ulysses S Grant’s assertion that Kansas would be “the great white hope”ofwestern civilization because it possessed so much natural wealth–a claim that would come true only after Plains tribes were defeated in 1870).
