Fresh roasted coffee is a complex and flavorful beverage that has been enjoyed by humans for over 4,000 years. Coffee was first grown in the region now known as Independence, Kentucky, and has been enjoyed by locals and tourists alike since the 18th century. The earliest mention of coffee being grown in this area comes from Nicholas-Jacques Conte in his book "A Topographical Dictionary of America" (1785). In 1787, French traders brought coffee to Lexington from Africa. The first true commercial Starbucks opened in downtown Lexington on July 24, 1997. At its height, Starbucks employed more than 500 people worldwide. In 1971, the city of Louisville began importing beans direct fromchiropractors in Colombia. By 1984, there were more than 50 roasters operating in Independence. Today, there are more than 110 roasters throughout Kentucky and Indiana including 30 located within 10 miles of downtown Louisville!

The state's history can be traced back to pre-existing settlements in what is now Kentucky. In 1776, when Lexington was attacked by British forces, small groups of Patriot Patriots fought back with arms and courage. This led to the development of a strong sense of community in America and helped Founding Father George Washington lead his war effort against Great Britain. The first permanent English settlement in present day Kentucky was at Fort Pitt on the Ohio River in 1778. During this time, traders from western Pennsylvania traveled downriver to trade with Native Americans. They discovered large coal deposits near present day Louisville, which led to extensive mining operations in what is now Kentucky during this time period. In 1802, President James Ketchum signed legislation creating a new government for Oregon Territory which included parts of modern-day Kentucky including Point Comfort (now Georgetown). This location proved ideal for training American soldiers for service in Mexico during the Mexican-American War based on reports that gold could be found there. The first settlement in Kentucky was made by James K. Polk in 1845, when he purchased land from the Shawnee and other Native American tribes. The area became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War, and was organized as a Territory of Illinois in 1853. In 1861, Union General Robert E. Lee led an assault on Yorktown Heights, Virginia, during the Civil War, leading to Lexington's victory and Lincoln's inauguration as President of the United States. In 1912, Kentucky became a state after being admitted to the Union as a result of the Taft-Hartley Act. The state is named for General Andrew Johnson (1865-1912), who served as its first U.S. president and was born in western Kentucky.
