In 1775, the Kentucky militia was called to arms against the British Crown. The state's first attempted formal annexation of Tennessee in 1802 saw a small group of militiamen travel eastward and join forces with their Tennessee counterparts to fight a combined military campaign against an invading force from thatstate. In 1809, when the U.S. Constitution was ratified, the state's militias were given federal status and were allowed to bear arms for National defense. In 1861, as Confederate troops advanced through southwestern Kentucky towards Louisville, General George Buell ordered all Union forces in western Kentucky to fall back on Nashville – leaving behind a small army of only about 9,000 men defending eastern Kentucky against an estimated rebel force numbering up to 50,000 soldiers. Despite being outnumbered three-to-one by Confederate troops and having no artillery or other means of engaging these enemy forces directly, Union army soldiers fought bravely until they too were forced to retreat towards Lexington under heavy Confederate artillery fire. This event is commonly known as "The Battle of Bull Run."

In 1795, Kentucky became an independent state. It was a part of the United States of America until 1959. The land that is now Kentucky was first settled by Native Americans and then British colonists. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring that all men are created equal and entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In 1802, following the Mexican-American War, President James K. Polk signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war and put Mexico into compliance with the U.S.-Mexico Constitution. As part of this treaty, California was added to Mexico as well as Arizona and New Mexico while Texas remained under Spanish rule. The new states were not immediately granted independence because they needed to ratify other treaties creating their respective states before becoming an independent nation. On January 15th, 1907, Kentucky became an official state when its governor certified that it had met all requirements for statehood including a population census taken less than one year previous. On July 16th 1907, voters in three additional western territories – Oklahoma Territory (now Oklahoma), Kansas Territory (now Kansas) and Wyoming Territory (now Wyominy County outside Of Cincinnati) voted in favor of joining the Union as part of organized Colorado River country west of Interstate 40 between Phoenix and Denver· On August 15th 1907, due to differences over how much territory should be added east of I-40· On November 3rd 1907 Govan signedinto lawthe State Constitution which provided for equal representation for both male citizens and female citizens regardless of social class or color· The new constitution also recognized Indian lands located eastof I-40 as part of Kentucky rather than giving them away to Missouri· Citizens from eastern Kentucky who desired closer ties with their original home region voted overwhelmingly in favor of secession on December 11th 1914· On February 20th 1915 Governor John Graves Simrill announcedthat Lexington would become the capital city · The result marked another victory for indepence over federal control· After more than two years negotiations in Frankfort Avenue diplomatic offices began on March 1st 1916 when Confederate Gen’l Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House· This event marks one significant milestone inKY history but did not bring about formal annexation by Virginia
