In 1812, General James Ketchum laid out what is now downtown Independence on land that he had purchased from Andrew Jackson. The town was incorporated in 1827 and soon became a center for education and industry. During World War II, Independence was Hit hard bybombing raids from the Japanese during World War II because of its strategic location within Japan's fire-support area for aircraft operations over Korea. However, thanks to Army Air Forces Engineer units working behind enemy lines throughout the war, much damage was done to infrastructure including bridges and homes which were replaced quickly with more durable structures by local builders or volunteers who worked side-by-side with government engineers!

By 1900, Independence had grown significantly thanks to its location as an important transportation hub and its relationship with Louisville – both cities were home to large factories that produced goods for export throughout much of North America.
