In 1881, the United States Air Force was created as a result of the Spanish-American War. The first fighters were built at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio and these began combat operations against Spanish forces in 1898. It wasn't until 1917 that fighter planes became operational over France during World War I. In 1918, the U.S. military established an air force training base at Kirtland AFB in New Mexico which would become one of the largest and most important air forces in existence by 1945. TheAAF was disbanded on September 15th, 1947 and its components absorbed into other branches of the military with the exception of fighter pilots who continued to serve with distinction through all wars since then!

On November 3, 1947, the United States Air Force bestowed its first gift to the city of Independence, Kentucky. The aircraft carrier Yorktown was gifted to the city by then-Secretary of Defense James Forrestal in recognition of the town's important role in World War II.
Kentucky is the most recent state to secede from the Union, on July 1,1861. The movement for independence in Kentucky was led by men such as Dr. Benjamin Hawkins and James Buchanan. The Confederate States of America claimed that Kentucky was part of their territory, while many residents in Kentucky saw themselves as having a separate history and culture from those in slave states south of the Potomac River. The battle over whether or not to secede began with militia outbreaks in December 1860 and January 1861. In February 1861, Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order calling for all eastern states to recognize the new Confederacy if they did not wish to fall under its jurisdiction. This action set off a chain reaction of events that led to the Civil War. On April 12, 1861, Confederate General John Custer attacked a Union battery at Hardee’s Mill on the Cumberland River near Lexington; this event is commonly known as Battle of Gettysburg. On April 15th Lincoln called for volunteers from all across America to help patrol the borders of Kentucky because “the public mind is agitated within these borders about issues which have nothing directly connected with slavery but which are dear to our hearts...We must do something” (Lincoln). On May 10th Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded western Virginia and marched into Lexington; this event is also known as Battle of Winchester. On June 9th President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation ordering all slaves who had lived in each state before July 1st 1865 to leave that state or be free; this measure was known as The Thirteenth Amendment. Jefferson Davis announced his candidacy for president on November 3rd and won election on December 6th despite being outspent by Andrew Johnson. The history of the United States Air Force (USAF) gift giving tradition dates back to World War II. TheAAF was formed in 1947 as the Military Airlift Command, and soon became known for its strategic bombing capabilities. In 1949, the USAF became an independent service with its own headquarters and primary responsibility for airlift and support operations. During the Cold War, gifts from the USAF were critical to maintaining America’s deterrence posture against potential adversaries. In particular, USAAF planes played a vital role in Operation Overlord, which led to Britain’s capitulation during the war. The RAF also contributed aircraft and crews to USAAF operations in Europe during the war. Today, USAF gift giving is a common occurrence within the service. In 1792, the United States of America was formed from the former British colonies of North America. The country's first president, James K. Polk, declared in a speech that "the day of American independence is at hand." In 1801, Kentucky became a part of the new country and was among the states to ratify the Constitution. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Kentucky joined the Confederacy and seceded from the Union. Three years later, on April 14, 1865, Lexington residents began celebrating "The Mayflower" landing as an example of how southern slaveowners could effectively resist northern abolitionist efforts. Withdrawing its military support from both sides after the Civil War ended less than two years later left Kentucky with large African-American populations and a difficult relationship with its northern neighbor. Today, Independence is home to more than 50 businesses and cultural institutions including two symphony orchestras and three professional football teams (the Wildcats (football), Cardinals (football) and Bengals (football)), as well as numerous smaller businesses and organizations. The city also hosts several major annual events such as Kynectfest which celebrates arts & culture in downtown Lexington; Bluegrass Music Festival; Fairsegue; Strawberry Festival; EasterFest; Shakespeare in Park; Derby Day Parade/Festival; and Father's Day Celebration. Additionally, Independence offers nearly 2 dozen acres of parkland including Lake Cumberland National Wildlife Refuge which provides habitat for over 100 species of migratory birds each year.;
In 1792, Kentucky became a part of the United States of America after the American Revolution. The following year, the legislature approved a bill to create a new state named "Kentucky" out of parts of Virginia and Tennessee. On July 15, 1792, the state's first constitution was ratified. The document granted citizens of Kentucky rights similar to those enjoyed by U.S. citizens and provided for a unicameral legislature with three members from each district. In 1802, the state passed its first land grant law and began awarding deeds of land to farmers and mechanics who had contributed to the development of Kentucky. In 1815, President James K. Polk issued an executive order that created four counties in central Kentucky - Harlan, Logan, Pike, and Worth - as part of his policy known as "The Great Westward Movement." This order allowed for large-scale immigration into what was then considered westward-moving America and helped spur economic growth in eastern Kentucky during the late 19th century. During this time period also came significant changes withinKentucky politics as well: For instance, John A. Mosby became governor in 1864 and led an unsuccessful effort to secede from the United States; but he soon returned to office under pressure from powerful east Tennessee politicians who wanted their own territory carved out of western Kentucky (the so-called Radicals). In 1886 Ku Klux Klan activity increased in eastern Kentucky following an attack on a black church near Louisville; this led to increased violence throughout much of rural eastern KY during Reconstruction era (1889-1912). However, by 1895 most southern Kysters had abandoned any claims to eastern KY., thus halting any further proscription against black people living there...
