He started World Coffee Day in 1984 to promote world peace through sustainable sourcing practices for coffee beans and wood products. Hopkinsville is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The Hopkinsville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The first European to visit what is now Hopkinsville was Colonel John Forbes in 1775 and he named it after him because he had been sent there by General James Wilkinson to survey a new route for the Continental Army's march westward from Philadelphia through western Kentucky. He found that the costal road from Louisville to Frankfort would be much too difficult and costly to build, so he turned instead towards Hopkinsville on July 12, 1775. In 1800, Amos Cline founded Cline lumberyards which have produced over one million boards and sheets of wood since 1825. In 1890, Isaac Mosely opened his country store here which became one of the most important small businesses in Hopkinsville until it closed its doors in 1976 due to economic decline. Other early businesses include Witherspoon & Sons Periodical Store (founded 1892), Goudreau's Brewery (1896), First National Bank (1901) and Pemberton Drug Company (1912). The post office called Hopkinsville from 1828 until 1850; then it was moved to Lebanon and operated there until 1862 when it reopened at Hopkinsville under the name Mount Vernon Post Office. The present post office building was built in 1916-17 as a replacement for an earlier structure which burned down two years earlier. During World War II, however, many Irish Americans served with distinction in the United States military including George Patton, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin among others The decline of manufacturing production during the late 20th century led to heavy job losses for locals such as steelworkers at nearby Decatur Steelworks which closed down after sixty years in business In recent decades there has been some redevelopment taking place with projects such as Stroudsburg University's campus expansion which includes new dormitories The population of Hopkinsville steadily grew from around 10K residents when it was chartered as a town by James Laughlin in 1817 until it reached over 25K by 1930 .
